Ten minutes later, Dre turned up Benham and slowly cruised up his street. Always one to pay close attention to his surroundings, he felt something was not right as he approached his home. His suspicions quickly grew once he noticed a suspicious car parked across the street from his house.

Dre could clearly see the silhouette of a person sitting in the front seat almost as if they were watching his home. Without hesitation, Dre quickly pulled out his cell phone and called Nikki. She was right behind him wondering why he had suddenly stopped in mid-drive. She had nearly collided with his bumper after the unexpected stop.

Nikki answered on the second ring. “What’s up? Why you stop?” she asked. Her tone was laced with agitation.

“Yo, some shit ain’t right,” Dre told her. “Turn around and follow me,” he instructed.

Nikki pulled the phone away from her long enough to scrutinize it. Placing it back against her ear, she asked, “What are you talkin’ about?”

“Just do what I said, Nikki. Damn,” Dre snapped before disconnecting the call. Now wasn’t the time to ask questions.

Pulling his car in the nearest driveway, Dre quickly turned around and headed in the opposite direction from which he had come. Nikki quickly followed suit.

Dre led her to the next destination which was the El Dorado motel located on Broadway Avenue.

“What the hell is going on?” she muttered as she parked her car beside his.

Dre quickly hopped out, rounded his car, and walked up to Nikki’s passenger door. She unlocked the door and watched as he hurriedly climbed inside.

“What’s going on?” she asked. “Why couldn’t we go home?”

Dre rubbed his hands together and blew his warm breath into them. The heat in his car was not functioning properly. “I think someone was watching our house.”

“Watching our house?!” Nikki repeated in disbelief. “Why would someone be watching our house? You don’t think they connected us with the Key Bank robbery, do you?” she asked concerned.

Dre shrugged. “I don’t know,” he said. “But what I do know is it’s not safe to go back home. From the way that car was just sittin’ in front of the house, I’m guessin’ they put officers on surveillance to wait for us to pop up,” he explained.

“Are you sure?” Nikki asked in skepticism. “How do you know that car wasn’t there for someone else and maybe they just parked in front of the wrong home? I mean, I could see our house from the car and it looked fine to me—”

“Bay, of course everything looks fine. You thought we were goin’ to ride up and see our front door kicked open and caution tape surrounding the house?” Dre asked sarcastically. “They don’t want anything to look suspicious because we’ll know they’ve been there.” He took Nikki’s hands in his. “Look, bay you gotta trust me, aight?”

“What about Hassan?” Nikki asked with a worrisome look on her face.

“Shit, they probably got that nigga. I don’t know what’s gonna happen with him but right now all I’m worried about is you and me,” he told her.
